Weekend recap: 06.06-06.08

We drove to the beach. For the entire 30 minute ride there, Doug and I asked each other, “Why don’t we do this more often?” There is no good reason, or excuse– but we’re going to try and get out there often this summer. We walked up and down the sandy beach and greeted every single dog we saw. I found a sand dollar, but unfortunately it broke today as I was transporting it from my car to my apartment. I also decided to ‘test’ the water. Verdict: freezing.

Then we ventured into the downtown area and found an Italian bakery. We bought two mini cannolis, although we didn’t eat them until the next day. Once we realized the parking meter was about to run out, we walked back to the car and headed to our next destination: Dairy Queen.

Eating ice cream after you haven’t had any for about 5 weeks is a weird experience. The weirdest part of it was actually not the taste/flavor/insane sweetness. It was the portion size. I ordered a small Blizzard and when I began eating it, I started laughing because I thought there was no possible way I’d finish it. It seemed like SO MUCH ice cream. However, I did finish it- and did not suffer a bit of stomach pain. Apparently I can’t eat a small container of yogurt with only 5 ingredients (one of which is milk from grass-fed cows), but I can scarf down a DQ s’mores Blizzard no problem. Okay, body.

My second summer course ended after 8 grueling hours spent sitting near a floor-to-ceiling window on the nicest day in a long time. However, the Salem Witch Trials are super interesting, and I’m glad I chose to take the class. My favorite part was when we talked about the current tourist industry in Salem, modern day witches who live in Salem, and in general, the way the trials influence the town of Salem today.

After class ended, I went home, ate my cannoli and collapsed for about two hours. I was the crankiest I’d been in forever, probably because I’d woken up at 6:00am! I finally dragged myself off the couch, changed my clothes, and made myself presentable. We went out to one of our favorite local restaurants for our friend’s birthday. For some reason, Doug (my husband- you probably didn’t know that) decided we should order a fish bowl. Kind of a good decision, but maybe not worth $10.

After dinner, we all headed back to our place, sat on the deck, and talked about life (for real). Then we hit our favorite bars, did some karaoke, and finally called it a night around 1:00am. The best moment of the night, hands down, was our friend trying to “ding dong ditch” people on the walk back. Crazy times.

We slept till 10:00am, which is SO late for us. Around 12:30, we went to my mother-in-law’s house to pick up our huge fan we stored there over the winter. It hit 86F here today! We hung out with her for a while, which was nice. She only lives 15 minutes away and unfortunately we don’t see her nearly as much as we should.

Then we did our typical Sunday stuff, a.k.a., grocery shopping. I prepped food for the week and cleaned the apartment when we came home, then read for a while. We went for a walk (also a typical Sunday thing). I made Doug’s favorite dinner: apple mustard pork sliders; we watched Game of Thrones, etc. And now I’m going to sleep! I feel really refreshed and ready for the week ahead. My cold is finally gone, and I am quite relaxed 🙂
